TIRANA, Nov. 26 (Xinhua) -- The Macedonian government and the main opposition have traded accusations against each other after police had raided a private TV station in the country, news from Skopje reported on Friday.
Police raided the private A1 TV station Thursday night, saying they were helping tax inspectors to investigate the fraud and tax evasion allegations concerning other businesses owned by the same media group.
A crowd of more than 1,000 supporters and opposition leaders gathered outside the headquarters of the TV station late Thursday night to protest the raid, which journalists claimed was an effort to intimidate the country's free press.
Macedonia's ruling VMRO-DPMNE party, led by Prime Minister Nikola Gruevksi, accused the opposition on Friday of trying to provoke violence by staging a protest over the raid.
The opposition Social Democrats condemned the raid as an intimidation against the pro-opposition TV station, and the news outlet called the raid "politically motivated."
The opposition has called for early elections in the tiny western Balkan country after it failed to secure an invitation to join NATO at the alliance's summit in Lisbon, Portugal, last week.
Branko Crvenkovski, leader of the opposition, has said that his party will file a no-confidence vote against the government after next month's EU summit.
