Bosnian Intellectuals Rally for Divjak

A group of Bosnian artists and intellectual has called for the release of Bosnian Army General Jovan Divjak, who was arrested in Vienna on March 3.

Divjak was taken into custody in response to a request from Serbia, where he is suspected of war crimes against the Yugoslav People’s Army, JNA.

He was placed in home custody by an Austrian court, where he awaits a decision on extradition to Serbia. Bosnia has also sent an extradition request for him....more...

Retired Bosnian Army general Jovan Divjak, who was arrested in Vienna in March on a Serbian warrant, has asked Austria to allow him to return to Bosnia as soon as possible

Interpellation d'un ex-général de l'armée bosnienne à Vienne

Jovan Divjak, un ancien général de l'armée bosnienne et une figure clé de la défense de Sarajevo pendant le siège de la ville (1992-1995), a été interpellé à l'aéroport de Vienne, a indiqué jeudi 3 mars au soir le ministre des affaires étrangères bosnien, Sven Alkalaj.
"Nous avons des informations selon lesquelles [M. Divjak] a été interpellé sur la base d'un mandat d'arrêt d'Interpol", a déclaré M. Alkalaj par téléphone à la chaîne de télévision publique bosnienne FTV. Le ministre a ajouté que les causes de l'arrestation de M. Divjak n'étaient pas connues dans l'immédiat et qu'elles devraient être annoncées vendredi matin par la justice autrichienne, qui devrait interroger l'ancien militaire. "Nous pouvons seulement supposer qu'il s'agit d'un mandat d'arrêt émis par la Serbie", a déclaré M. Alkalaj.

Thousands Protest In Support Of Bosnian General

Some five thousand Bosnians protested on Saturday in support of Bosnian General Jovan Divjak, arrested on Thursday on a warrant from Serbia, where he is accused of war crimes.
Protesters gathered in downtown Sarajevo to speak out against the arrest of Divjak, who is considered by many in Bosnia to be a national hero.
Protesters yelled: “Give us Jova back!”, “Jovo, our Serb, the whole city is with you!”, as they demonstrated in front of the Austrian and Serbian embassies and the country’s presidency.

*Jovan Divjak (Serbian Cyrillic: Јован Дивјак) (born March 11, 1937 in Belgrade, Kingdom of Yugoslavia) was a Bosnian general in the Bosnian army during the 1992-1995 Bosnian War. He was the deputy commander of the Main Staff until 1994. He is a self-declared Bosnian.[1][2]
