Still in Denial

Pope Bendict XVI just wrapped up a visit to Croatia today. While Catholic reporters emphasized the pontiff's message about the importance of family, a few reporters here and there noted the controversial praising of Cardinal Aloysius Stepinac.

Roman Catholics may believe their pontiff is incapable of error on matters religious. He definitely can - and does - err on matters historical. Far from being "manipulated by Hitler for his own ends," the so-called Independent State of Croatia (1941-45) was considered at the time the crowning achievement of Croatians' legitimate aspirations to statehood.

Pope shooter alleges Vatican planned the assassination

euronews

10/11 15:21 CET

In 1983 Pope John Paul II met his would-be assassin, Mehmet Ali Agca, face to face.
The killer who murdered a left-wing journalist in 1979 and then shot and wounded the Polish pope in 1981, has appeared on Turkish television.
The man who spent 19 years in an Italian prison and ten in a Turkish jail was released earlier this year.
During the interview Agca alleged that the Vatican planned the murder of the pontiff.
“The Vatican government decided to assassinate the Pope. They planned and organised it. The order to shoot the Pope was given by Vatican secretary, Cardinal Agostino Casaroli.”
Cardinal Casaroli was the Vatican’s Secretary of State under John Paul II. He was the man behind the Rome’s efforts to deal with the persecution of Catholics in the Soviet empire.
Agca’s latest accusation is just one of many he has made since he attempted to kill the Pope.
At the time of the shooting he said he acted alone.
The Pope was shot twice in the stomach, once in the right arm, the fourth bullet hit his little finger.
He went on the make a complete recovery.
The Vatican has not responded to the accusations.

Pope Benedict to visit Croatia in 2011

ZAGREB Fri Oct 29, 2010 12:25pm BST
ZAGREB (Reuters) - Pope Benedict will pay his first visit to Croatia since taking office in the first half of next year, Croatian officials said Friday.
"It will be a big event and I am really pleased," President Ivo Josipovic, who declares himself as an agnostic, told reporters after meeting Roman Catholic church dignitaries.
Josipovic visited the Vatican earlier this month.
"It will most probably take place during a weekend in the first half of next year," added Cardinal Josip Bozanic. Benedict's predecessor, John Paul, visited Croatia three times since it proclaimed independence from communist Yugoslavia in 1991. More than 90 percent of Croatia's 4.4 million people declare themselves as Catholics.
