Commander of UN forces 'aware Srebrenica massacre was about to happen'

The Dutch commander of UN forces charged with protecting Bosnian Muslims in Srebrenica was aware that the massacre was about to happen, an army surgeon who allegedly witnessed the killings has claimed in a new television documentary.

A gunman fired on the United States embassy in Bosnia on Friday in a 30-minute assault blamed by state television on a radical Islamist from neighbouring Serbia.
The gunman was wounded by a police sniper during the attack in Sarajevo's busy downtown, in which a police officer was seriously wounded and shop workers scrambled for cover....more....

A man opened fire with an automatic weapon outside the US Embassy in Bosnia on Friday.
After a 30-minute standoff, the sound of a single shot echoed and the shooter – brandishing a Kalashnikov on a street corner outside of the embassy – slumped to the ground. He was shot in the leg and was under police guard in hospital on Friday night....more...

Serbia recommended for EU membership but needs to sort out Kosovo

Serbia has been given the coveted status of becoming a candidate for EU membership as long as Belgrade makes progress on settling a border dispute with Kosovo, a breakaway former Serbian province.

Ratko Mladic has been admitted to hospital with pneumonia, raising new concerns that the former Bosnian-Serb general will not live long enough to face trial for alleged genocide and war crimes.

A UN court Tuesday sentenced ex-Yugoslav army chief Momcilo Perisic to 27 years in jail for war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Perisic, the highest ranking member of the former Yugoslav army, appeared a hearing before the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia in the Hague (ICTY).
Chief of the Yugoslav army's general staff between 1993 and 1998, Perisic gave personnel, officers, weapons and logistical support to the Bosnian Serb army as well as the self-proclaimed republic of Krajina's army, knowing it would be used to wage war and commit crimes against Muslim civilians, the judge said....more...

A dispute over the ownership of a historic monastery on the Adriatic coast is causing bad blood between Croatia and the Vatican.

Goran Hadzic, Serbia's last major war crimes fugitive, a Croatian Serb wartime leader indicted for crimes against humanity during the 1991-95 Croatian war, has been arrested.

Hadzic was a key figure in the breakaway Krajina Serb republic in Croatia, and after the arrest of wartime General Ratko Mladic earlier this year, he was Serbia's last remaining figure sought by the United Nations war crime tribunal in the Hague.

A Serbian official confirmed the arrest but declined to give details. President Boris Tadic, who announced the arrest of Mladic in May, scheduled an urgent news conference for 11am. (0900 GMT)....more...
