Recognizing Slovenia, Croatia brought peace, Genscher says

deutsche welle
EUROPEAN TIES

25.06.2011
Despite thinking Yugoslavia needed to be preserved at all costs, former West German Foreign Minister Genscher became a prominent advocate of Croatian and Slovenian independence. He tells DW what changed his mind.

Veteran West German Foreign Minister Hans-Dietrich Genscher, one of the most prominent advocates of Croatian and Slovenian independence, spoke to Deutsche Welle about the events in the former Yugoslavia 20 years ago.

DW: Several villages and towns in Croatia have a Genscher Street or a Genscher Square. On the island of Brac, residents are squabbling over which Genscher bust is more beautiful – the marble one or the one made of bronze. Does all this attention make you proud?...more....

Let's hear it for the Yugosphere

the economist
The former Yugoslavia
Jun 23rd 2011, 14:56 by T.J.

A KEY event in the break-up of Yugoslavia took place 20 years ago this week. On June 27th 1991 the Yugoslav army moved to re-establish control of the border in Slovenia. Croatia and Slovenia had declared independence a week earlier. The Belgrade magazine Vreme is marking the event and asked me to contribute a piece. Here is the English-language version:

Some misunderstood me, but the fact that the word has since entered the lexicon suggests that it usefully captures something many people instinctively knew existed—and indeed lived every day. ...more...

VIEWS FROM THE CAPITALS – LJUBLJANA: A euro storm in Slovenia’s tea-cup stirs up old communist divisions

europe's world
30.05.2011
Author: Cirila Toplak
The Bank of Slovenia sparked a political storm when it decided earlier this year to issue a commemorative euro coin featuring Franc Rozman Stane, the commander-in-chief of the country’s partisan army during World War II.

Conservative politicians objected to a well-known communist adorning the €2 coins, even though he died during the war and is regarded as a national hero in Slovenia. Right-wing politicians also protested about the accompanying Red Star, which is a symbol of Slovenia’s anti-Fascist resistance as well as international communism. They feared the coin sent the wrong message to fellow ex-communist EU member states, some of which have banned the Red Star from public life.....more....
