Published: November 5, 2011
THE HAGUE — Each time Ratko Mladic has come to court, he has complained about his health — his fatigue, his stroke-weakened right arm, his kidney pains — emphasizing his ailments as if they were the central focus of his trial on war crimes and genocide charges.
But as the extent of health problems of Mr. Mladic, the former Bosnian Serb general, has become more apparent after five months in custody, court officials worry that they may well shape the case against him, their most high-profile defendant....more...

International justice system blossoms

Opinion
No longer can war criminals expect amnesty 'for the sake of peace', no longer are victims asked to forget.

David Tolbert Last Modified: 17 Jul 2011 08:11

As we acknowledge International Justice Day on July 17, calls for accountability for human rights abuses resound across the globe, from Cairo to Washington, from Bogota to Kinshasa, from Srebrenica to Colombo. The demands for justice are today a driving force of social change and popular revolutions, and their reach now extends to those at the highest levels of power. Those leaders have, from time immemorial, been deemed untouchable and often afforded immunity in furtive and shabby deals that shielded them from prosecution "for the sake of peace". That day is passing....more...

The Shame of Serbia

 OP-ED CONTRIBUTOR
By NATASHA KANDIC

Published: June 5, 2011

Belgrade, Serbia
THE arrest of Ratko Mladic on May 26 caught me off guard. I couldn’t believe it. I clenched my fists, trying to grip him tightly in my hands. Finally, I breathed a sigh of relief.
But then I heard the speech by the Serbian president, Boris Tadic. For him, Mr. Mladic’s arrest represents the closing of a dark chapter in our history and a removal of the mark of shame that has stained the Serbian people for two decades. But there was no mention of the many other perpetrators of genocide during the 1990s or of the responsibility the Serbian state bears for those crimes. Once again, it seems, we might lose the chance to open a painful but necessary debate about the past....more....

Ratko Mladic was removed from the UN war crimes court at The Hague on Monday after refusing to enter a plea and repeatedly talking while the judge attempted to read the list of charges.

The presiding judge, Alphons Orie, briefly adjourned the hearing to have Mladic removed, and formally entered not guilty pleas on the former general's behalf, in line with court rules for suspects who refuse to plead.
Mladic argued he should be allowed to choose his own lawyers and refused to listen to the charges. "You are trying to impose impossible conditions on me – a lawyer I do not want," he said....more...
