Macedonia Unhappy With Greece Over Progress With Name Dispute

PRAGUE -- Macedonia is concerned at the lack of progress in UN-mediated talks with Greece about the country's formal name, RFE/RL's Balkan Service reports.
Greece and Macedonia have been at loggerheads over the use of the name "Macedonia" for nearly two decades.
Macedonia was admitted to the UN under the name Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) because Greece lays claim to the toponym "Macedonia" as part of its classical heritage....more...

Rapporteur Hopeful on Macedonia Name Compromise

Macedonia could get its much-desired start date for EU accession talks by the end of this year provided it reaches a "name" compromise with Greece by then, says European Parliament rapporteur on Macedonia, Richard Howitt.

THE 20th anniversary of Macedonian independence (this and most other links in Greek, but google translate gives the gist) also marks the anniversary of what has to be one of the silliest rows in international politics. EU officials hope that the name dispute between Macedonia and Greece will be solved by the end of this year. As nice as that sounds it is hard to believe it is true. While Macedonia (or FYROM, for Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia) seemed to be, for the most part, the more reasonable of the two, lately it lost support through its attempts to tweak the Greek tail....more...

No Secret "Name" Talks, Greek MEP Says

Sinking Pacific Islands Recognize Macedonia

Macedonia Urged to Solve “Name” Dispute

Just days after the general elections in Macedonia, the US reminds the government in Skopje that it has unfinished business regarding the name dispute with Greece.
