Bulgarian Nationalists Under Attack from Left, Right

Bulgaria's political parties condemned on Wednesday the actions of the nationalist Ataka party in front of a Sofia mosque last week, as three MPs announced they are leaving the party.

The parties demanded that the Prosecutor's Office carry out a probe and presses legal charges against those responsible for the bloody clash. "The Prime Minister must kick Ataka out of the Parliament, and take a firm stand against the behavior of its party members and followers," Lyutvi Mestan, MP from the ethnic Turkish party Movement for Rights and Freedoms, DPS, said in parliament....more....

Bulgaria: Attack on Muslims 'Not Mere Hooliganism'

The Bulgarian Helsinki Committee has criticised the decision of the Prosecutor to press hooliganism charges against supporters of the nationalist Ataka party accused of assaulting Muslims in Sofia.

Supporters of the Bulgarian nationalist Ataka party held a protest that turned violent in front of a mosque in downtown Sofia on Friday, leaving several people injured.

Wikileaks: Bulgaria's Ataka Shows Anti-US Sentiment

In a cable sent from the US embassy in Sofia in 2005, the then American ambassador John Beyrle warned of the increasing anti-American stance of the nationalist Ataka party.
