More than 40,000 people have gathered to commemorate the 16th anniversary of the Srebrenica massacre, just weeks after the arrest of the alleged mastermind of the killings, General Ratko Mladic.
Relatives of some 8,000 Muslim victims of the massacre headed to the cemetery where more than 4,000 victims are buried.
Six hundred and thirteen more bodies of victims were due to be buried during the July 11 commemoration service....more...

THE arrest of Ratko Mladic on May 26 caught me off guard. I couldn’t believe it. I clenched my fists, trying to grip him tightly in my hands. Finally, I breathed a sigh of relief.
But then I heard the speech by the Serbian president, Boris Tadic. For him, Mr. Mladic’s arrest represents the closing of a dark chapter in our history and a removal of the mark of shame that has stained the Serbian people for two decades. But there was no mention of the many other perpetrators of genocide during the 1990s or of the responsibility the Serbian state bears for those crimes. Once again, it seems, we might lose the chance to open a painful but necessary debate about the past....more....

The day before his extradition to The Hague to face charges of war crimes and genocide, Ratko Mladic requested permission from the Serbian authorities to visit the grave of his daughter Ana.
She had committed suicide in 1994 at the height of the Bosnian conflict that had earned her father worldwide notoriety. Mladic wouldn’t take no for an answer: let me go, or bring her coffin to my cell was the message to his captors.

EU Parliament Rapporteur for Kosovo Ulrike Lunacek said that extradition of Mladic is insufficient for Serbia to join EU and that Serbia must do a whole lot more if it wants to join EU.

 Ratko Mladic has been awarded £44,000 in back pay of his war pension by Serbian authorities, his lawyer has claimed.

OK, so it’s “Russia Today” — and will therefore be blindly dismissed by most Americans — but I nonetheless have to take note of the fact that this is the first time, to my knowledge, that any news broadcast has had the audacity to report the paltriness of the evidence against an accused Serb upon his capture, rather than “tastefully” joining in on the anti-Serb wilding.
This means the information is finally getting out, including the fact that DNA CANNOT tell you the cause or manner of death. Here are the RT broadcasts, with the highlights appearing in print:

Le "ouf" de soulagement est perceptible, en Serbie d’abord. Chaque fois que Belgrade extrade un gros bonnet recherché par le tribunal de La Haye (Milosevic, Karadzic et maintenant Mladic), les autorités du pays respirent un peu mieux, surtout lorsque cette opération se passe sans anicroches – ce qui n’a pas toujours été le cas. Et la Serbie peut alors bomber le torse : chose promise, chose due. Pourtant, tout n’est pas fini. Mladic sera jugé par le Tribunal pénal international pour l’ex-Yougoslavie, mais qu’en est-il de ceux qui l’ont aidé dans sa cavale ?...more....

Serbia Unfreezes Mladic's Military Pension

BELGRADE -- Serbian authorities unfroze the military pension of Bosnian Serb war crimes indictee Ratko Mladic after he was handed over to The Hague war crimes tribunal last week, RFE/RL's Balkan Service reports.

Following Mladic's arrest on May 26 in a small town near Belgrade, officials paid about 50,000 euros ($70,000) to Mladic's family in pension arrears that had accrued since late 2005, when the government decided to increase pressure on the then-fugitive general.

Mladic is accused of mass killings, forceful deportations, and other crimes against non-Serbs during Bosnia's 1992-95 war.....more....

Mladic 'treated for cancer in 2009'

The lawyer representing the former Bosnian Serb commander Ratko Mladic has said he has a document proving the war crimes suspect has been battling cancer and was treated at a Serbian hospital in 2009.

Milos Saljic said Mladic has suffered from lymph node cancer and that he underwent surgery and chemotherapy in 2009. The lawyer showed the AP what he said was a photocopy of a doctors' diagnosis saying Mladic was in a Serbian hospital between 20 April and 18 July 2009....more....

Cela prend du temps, mais on y arrive. Surtout lorsqu’on nous laisse travailler à notre rythme et, surtout, à notre manière. C’est ce que disaient – et disent toujours – les responsables serbes concernant les criminels de guerre en cavale. Aujourd’hui plus que jamais, on leur donnera raison. En 2008, la police serbe arrêtait devant une station de bus de Belgrade un homme portant barbe et catogan, à priori sans histoires. C’était Radovan Karadzic, le « docteur fou » de Pale, l’éphémère capitale des Serbes de Bosnie pendant la guerre. Le 26 mai 2011, les forces spéciales serbes investissaient une maison de Lazarevo, au nord de la Serbie, pour y appréhender « sans résistance aucune » le « bourreau de Srebrenica », à savoir le chef militaire Ratko Mladic....more....

It just occurred to me this morning that I haven't written anything here about last week's arrest of Gen. Ratko Mladic. I've been busy commenting elsewhere - appearing on RT twice so far, writing three articles for the audiences in Serbia, and putting together a column on Mladic for Antiwar.com - and between all that, this particular venue got neglected.

I don't think I've seen this kind of venom and hatred, in such amounts, in the media since the Karadzic arrest in 2008. What happened in Bosnia was tragic and horrible enough, it doesn't need embellishment. I understand perfectly why the Muslims, Croats or Albanians would exaggerate or invent Serb atrocities - it's all part of the war effort, and these days, the camera is mightier than the cannon. But what drives American, and especially British reporters to simply make stuff up? Could it be that, without a villain, they - and the governments they shill for - can't posture as heroes?...more....

From historical perspective the Mladic’n arrest and the Hague trial serves as formation of a more comprehensive picture of events in the Balkans in the 90′s after the procecutor and the defense have made their case. Issues related to the underlying policy objectives of Srebrenica, events before Srebrenica and the number and the PR game around Srebrenica. Realization of the right however is only theatrical minor point for the EU and for the current Serbian government as both see it only as a formal step towards Serbia’s EU membership....more....
