Montenegro’s Biggest Cinema Snapped Up By Austrians

Austrian company "Cineplexx International" announced this week that it had bought the biggest cinema in Montenegro "Ster Cinema", according to media reports.

Montenegro's Vujanovic Criticised over Anthem Comments

In Montenegro a terrain is being prepared for autonomy of the Montenegrin and Coastal Littoral Eparchy. It is to be independent in view of organization from the Serbian Orthodox Church, ‘Blic’ learns. Russian businessmen are lobbying for such settlement of this problem. Apart from business dealing in Montenegro they have excellent relations with the authorities in Podgorica but also with some circles in the Russian Church. Montenegrin authorities find their proposal as ‘a good transient solution’ until setting up of autonomous Montenegrin Church....more....

THE first serious working week after the summer holidays has already produced a wealth of stories here in the western Balkans. Some are more serious than others, unless of course you live here, when they are all deadly serious. Here is a roundup of some of them.

Outside the old Yugoslav Federal Parliament building in the Serbian capital they are rolling up the red carpet which had been unrolled to welcome delegates to the 50th birthday bash of the Non-Aligned Movement, which I have written about here. Serbia, which hosted the gathering, is not a member, but never mind that. It finds it useful to lobby over the Kosovo issue and for business....more...

Montenegro to bury remains of German war dead

Germany and Montenegro have signed an agreement on burying the remains of German soldiers killed during World War II.
The agreement was reached during a visit to the Balkan state by the German Foreign Minister, Guido Westerwelle.
A site containing more than 400 bodies was excavated in Montenegro's capital Podgorica in 2007....more....

Fighting hunger with hunger

In economically challenging times, Montenegrins have embraced hunger strikes to affect change.

Hunger strikes have been on the rise as a means for Montenegrins to effectively exert pressure on employers and the government to claim back salaries, unpaid contributions, benefits, and accrue seniority.

"It turns out hunger striking is the only way to achieve our rights. It does not exist in the labour law, it is not covered, but it is the only way to solve something," Federation of Trade Unions of Montenegro (SSCG) employee Vukadin Cupic told SETimes.....more....

Montenegro's Marovic Resigns from DPS Post

Svetozar Marovic, the number-two man in Montenegro’s ruling Democratic Party of Socialists, DPS, resigned as party vice-president after receiving information that the National Security Agency was monitoring his family members.

Press vehicles torched in Montenegro

In the latest attack on the independent Montenegrin daily newspaper, two of its vehicles were set on fire in Podgorica on Thursday.

Vijesti said unknown persons had poured gas on vehicles owned by the newspaper and then set them on fire.

The cars, bearing the Vijesti logo, had been parked across from the headquarters of the Montenegrin intelligence agency....more...

Montenegro Releases Census Data

Fewer than half of Montenegro’s inhabitants are Montenegrins, according to census figures released by the Statistical Office.

While 45 percent of the country’s residents declared themselves to be Montenegrins, nearly 30 percent said they were Serbs.

Mining and commodity magnates descended this weekend on an unlikely new billionaires' playground in Montenegro, one of Europe's poorest countries, to celebrate the 40th birthday of the rising star of their firmament, Nat Rothschild.

The £1m party started on Thursday and will run over three nights, with guests moving from five-star hotel to poolside disco to the deck of a superyacht. The government of Montenegro has taken another step toward EU membership by adopting the Draft Law on Civil Servants.

Montenegro Resort Town Seeks €21 Million From Builders

In an effort to solve their financial problems, local authorities in the seaside resort town of Budva are working intensively to collect communal taxes owed by investors who have constructed buildings in the city.

The most indebted investors in Budva are those who took advantage of an old law allowing them to obtain a building permit prior to paying utility costs. Budva Municipality is owed around €21 million by such companies, with the biggest debtor identified as Podgorica-based Fab Lajv company, which will have to pay more than €8.2 million, Vijesti reports.....more....
