Turkey after the elections
It has not taken long for rancour to return to Turkish politics

from the print edition
RIDING on pledges of continued stability and more democracy, on June 12th Turkey’s conservative Justice and Development (AK) party was returned to an unprecedented third term of office. In his victory speech the prime minister, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, declared that he would work with the opposition to write a new constitution. Yet a fortnight later the country seems on the verge of political deadlock. At the opening session of the new parliament almost one-third of the deputies refused to be sworn in....more...

Understanding Turkey’s 2011 General Election Results – Analysis

eurasia review
Written by: FPRI

July 1, 2011

By Gerald Robbins
Now that the results are known from Turkey’s June 12 general election, it is an appropriate time to discern this strategically important nation’s state of affairs. Turkey-watching is never an easy matter, especially given the current government’s fluctuating ways which confound many analysts. Nearly a decade has passed since the Justice and Development came to power with its heavily-inspired Islamist thinking. Detractors see the AKP’s methodology as a stealth jihad that’s gradually eroding the country’s secularist bearings. Conversely, AKP’s proponents applaud the various reforms which the party has enacted, ostensibly projecting it as a “bridge” between Western and Muslim civilizations. Whatever the case may be, the Turkish post-electoral environment is at a critical crossroad with far-reaching implications for its society and beyond....more...

Turkish economy a post-election challenge

Experts say the government's first priority should be dealing with the economy.
By Esra Serez for Southeast European Times in Istanbul – 21/06/11
Markets saw the AKP victory in Turkey's June 12th general elections as an indicator of political stability, according to analysts in the country. They say the results were in line with expectations.

Concerns exist, however, that attention may drift away from urgent economic issues as the AKP concentrates on building political alliances and a host of other pressing issues....more....

The Western media and Erdogan: Falling out of love?

2011 may go down as the year when the Western media ‘fell out of love’ with Turkey’s ruling AKP. What went wrong?
By Alexander Christie-Miller for Southeast European Times in Istanbul – 21/06/11
When The Economist magazine urged voters to back the opposition CHP in Turkey’s recent general election, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan hinted Israel could be to blame.

“The international media, because they are backed by Israel, wouldn’t be happy with the continuation of the AK Party government,” said Erdogan, who won re-election on June 12th....more....

Turkey's election
It was an impressive victory for Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s ruling Justice and Development (AK) party. What will he do with it?

Jun 16th 2011

ANKARA AND ISTANBUL
from the print edition
THERE was a decided feeling of déjà vu when Turkey’s prime minister gave a victory speech on the balcony of his Justice and Development (AK) party’s Ankara headquarters after the June 12th election. When Recep Tayyip Erdogan was returned to single-party rule with a 47% voting share in 2007, he made identical-sounding pledges: to embrace those who did not vote for him, to mollify the opposition, to write a new constitution, not to interfere in secular Turks’ lifestyles, and to make peace with the Kurds. This time voters gave Mr Erdogan 50%, making him the first Turkish leader to win three elections in a row—and to increase his vote share each time. Turnout was high (87%) and the polls were unmarred by violence or fraud.....more....

This op-ed was sent exclusively to EurActiv by Egemen Bağış, Turkey's minister of EU affairs and Chief Negotiator.
"This Sunday approximately 50 million Turkish citizens will go to polls to decide on the government that will carry Turkey to its objectives set for its centennial in 2023. This election is also a vote of confidence in the country's reform process, which has brought stability and change hand in hand for the last decade.....more...

How to read the outcome of the Turkish elections

Turkey's upcoming parliamentary elections signal an opportunity for positive reform of the Turkish constitution and better relations with the European Union, argues Sinan Ülgen in an exclusive commentary for EurActiv.

This commentary was sent exclusively to EurActiv by Sinan Ülgen, a visiting scholar at Carnegie Europe in Brussels, a founding partner of the consultancy firm Istanbul Economics, and chairman of the Istanbul-based Centre for Economics and Foreign Policy Studies (EDAM).
"Turks will be going to the polls this Sunday to choose their next government. There is little uncertainty about the outcome. The ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) and its charismatic leader, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, are set to gain the backing of the Turkish population for a third consecutive term in power. The real uncertainty lies in the margin of victory the AKP will obtain. It is this that will ultimately shape the near-term political climate of the country.....more....

AKP wins, but falls short of 'Super Majority'

As expected, Turkey's Recep Tayyip Erdogan won another five-year term, with nearly half of the votes Sunday.
By Alakbar Raufoglu for Southeast European Times -- 13/06/11
By the time the polls closed, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's Justice and Development Party (AKP) had won 49.9% of the vote or 326 of the 550 seats in parliament. Although the AKP increased its vote percentage by nearly 4% over the 2007 election, due to parliamentary arithmetic the AKP lost 15 seats, leaving it short of the 330-seat "super majority" which would have enabled the party to vote on constitutional changes and send it to a referendum for a final decision.....more...
