ANKARA, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- One policeman was killed and three others wounded in a mine blast in southeastern Turkey on Sunday, the semi-official Anatolia news agency reported.
The mine, probably planted by the outlawed Kurdish Workers' Party (PKK), exploded while a police vehicle was passing by near Cukurca High School in Cukurca town of Hakkari province, killing one policeman and wounding three others, according to the report....more....

Turkey launched a military offensive in the predominantly Kurdish southeast in retaliation for an ambush by Kurdish separatists that killed 13 soldiers on Thursday. ISTANBUL — Kurdish rebels fighting for autonomy in southeastern Turkey ambushed a group of soldiers near Diyarbakir on Thursday, killing 13 and wounding 7, the Turkish military said on its Web site.
The attack, one of the deadliest on Turkish forces in recent years, was denounced by political leaders across the country. Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Turkey had the strength and determination to defeat terrorists and would do so “without ever compromising on democracy, law and brotherhood.”...more....

IN THE alleys of Diyarbakir, Kurdish urchins hurl stones at armoured police vehicles and flash victory signs. The police respond with water cannons. Such sights are common in the unofficial Kurdish capital. The latest outbreak began a month ago, after the Turkish army killed 12 members of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) on the Iraq border. The PKK, which had declared a ceasefire until the election on June 12th, now threatens to resume fighting unless Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the prime minister, offers Kurds more rights in a new constitution. Some Turks think it would be better to let the Kurds go. “Let them have their own country and get out of ours,” growls Remzi Kok, a carpenter in Istanbul....more...

A BALEFUL love song wafted from the Vizyon Muzik Market. Not so long ago playing Kurdish music over a loudspeaker into the streets here might have provoked the Turkish police. Just speaking the names of certain Kurdish singers at one time could have landed a Kurd in prison.
These days hundreds of CDs featuring Kurdish pop singers fill one of the long walls in the small, shoebox-shaped Vizyon Muzik. The discs face a few dozen Turkish ones. Abdulvahap Ciftci, the 25-year-old Kurd who runs the place, told me one sunny morning not long ago that customers buy some 250 Kurdish albums a week. “And maybe I sell one Turkish album,” he calculated, wagging a single finger, slowly. “Maybe.”...more....
