TIRANA, Dec. 1 (Xinhua) -- Albanian authorities on Wednesday declared a state of emergency as the country's northwestern region are under threat of heavy flooding.
Heavy rains and storms in recent days have wreaked a havoc in the district of Shkodra, about 120 kilometers northwest of the capital city of Tirana.
More than 7,780 hectares of arable lands and 1,190 houses have been flooded in low-lying region in the district, and the water level in the Shkodra Lake is rapidly rising.
"We are trying to mitigate the impact of the flooding in the region," Albanian Prime Minister Sali Berisha told a cabinet meeting on Wednesday.
It was reported that until Wednesday evening more than 500 families have been evacuated from their homes with the help of the army and police.
Northern Albania has been flooded several times this year due to heavy rains and the water discharged from hydro-plant reservoirs upstream.
