Seven of the 12 members of the Senior Board of Judges and Prosecutors resigned on Monday amid a power struggle between the staunchly secular judiciary and the religiously conservative government in Turkey. The board chairman said members were frustrated at not being allowed to perform their duties since the government proposed a referendum calling for major structural changes to the board, which is in charge of appointing and dismissing magistrates. The referendum passed a month ago. A Justice Ministry statement denied the claims and said the resignations were an effort to influence the election of new board members.
