The course of Ratko Mladic’s military career was typical of members of the officer corps recruited in accordance with the ideological concept of Josip Broz Tito's Yugoslavia.
Army ranks were filled on the basis of potential recruits' social background and class status. This was why candidates from farming and blue-collar families, particularly from the poorest, least economically developed regions, and which supported the Partisan movement in the Second World War, took precedence over others.
