Pope Benedict to visit Croatia in 2011

ZAGREB Fri Oct 29, 2010 12:25pm BST
ZAGREB (Reuters) - Pope Benedict will pay his first visit to Croatia since taking office in the first half of next year, Croatian officials said Friday.
"It will be a big event and I am really pleased," President Ivo Josipovic, who declares himself as an agnostic, told reporters after meeting Roman Catholic church dignitaries.
Josipovic visited the Vatican earlier this month.
"It will most probably take place during a weekend in the first half of next year," added Cardinal Josip Bozanic. Benedict's predecessor, John Paul, visited Croatia three times since it proclaimed independence from communist Yugoslavia in 1991. More than 90 percent of Croatia's 4.4 million people declare themselves as Catholics.
