A majority of MPs in the Kosovo Assembly voted in favour of a no-confidence motion against the government on Tuesday evening, including members of the biggest, governing party, the Democratic Party of Kosovo, PDK, paving the way for the snap poll.
Following the vote, Acting President Jakup Krasniqi announced the dissolution of parliament, in line with the constitution, and emergency elections on Sunday, December 12.
Out of 120 total deputies in the Assembly, 66 MPs supported the motion, one voted against, and two abstained.
Members of the government's former coalition partner, the Democratic League of Kosovo, LDK, did not vote.
Kosovo has been embroiled in a political crisis since its Constitutional Court ruled on Friday, September 24, that the then president Fatmir Sejidu could not also hold the position of leader of the LDK.

The following Monday, Sejdiu resigned as president and consultations between parties began to determine a date for early elections.

On October 15, acting president Krasniqi, a member of the PDK, announced that the poll would be held on February 13.

But the next day, Sejdiu, as leader of the LDK, decided to leave the coalition with Prime Minister Thaci's party, PDK, plunging the country deeper in political turmoil.
