Diplomatic Diary: Hungary supports Turkey's EU bid

Ankara's chief negotiator gets a show of support in Budapest. Also in diplomatic news: Greece and Macedonia discuss the name dispute and Poland backs Romania's Schengen bid.

Hungary says it supports Turkey's efforts to join the EU and will try to push the case when it assumes the bloc's rotating presidency next year. Egemen Bagis, Turkey's chief negotiator for talks with the EU, was in Budapest on Wednesday (October 27th) to meet with Hungarian Foreign Minister Janos Martonyi. Turkey's EU talks have stalled for a variety of reasons.

Serbian Justice Minister Snezana Malovic and Montenegrin Ambassador to Serbia Igor Jovic signed an extradition treaty in Belgrade on Friday (October 29th). The document, which became effective the moment it was signed, allows for the mutual extradition of citizens of the two countries.

Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou and Macedonian counterpart Nikola Gruevski met in Brussels on Friday (October 29th) to discuss the long-standing name dispute between their countries. Both sides reiterated their commitment to continue discussions to settle the issue. Gruevski had met on Wednesday with European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso, who called on both sides to find a solution.

Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski told Romanian Prime Minister Emil Boc at a meeting in Bucharest on October 26th that his country fully supports Romania's efforts to join the EU's Schengen zone next year. Boc praised Poland's experience in the successful absorption of EU funds. Komorowski also met with counterpart Traian Basescu, pledging efforts to boost co-operation between their countries within the EU and NATO structures.

Bulgarian Minister Without Portfolio Bozhidar Dimitrov arrived in Albania on Saturday (October 30th) for meetings with representatives of the country's Bulgarian community and with Albanian Foreign Minister Edmond Haxhinasto. Also on the agenda was a visit to the town of Berat, home of the relics of the Old Bulgarian saints Angelariy, Sava and Gorazd, disciples of Saints Cyril and Methodius.
