Croatian PM Survives No-Confidence Vote

28 Oct 2010 / 14:01

Croatian Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor and her government have survived a no-confidence vote launched by the opposition over the country's economic situation.
-
The vote was rejected early Thursday morning following a 15 hour debate in the parliament.
79 deputies from Kosor's ruling HDZ majority voted against the motion, while 62 opposition MPs were in favour and one deputy abstained.
After the marathon debate, another 60 MPs were scheduled to speak, but the debate was adjourned after Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) vice president Vladimir Seks criticised the opposition Social Democrats, SDP) saying the party was acting against the constitution.Following criticism from the ruling party, SDP leader Zoran Milanovic said he no longer wanted to participate in the debate, which he called shameful.PM Kosor said a lot of harsh and inappropriate words were used during the discussion in parliament, arguing that such words should not be used in parliament.
The no-confidence motion was filed by the opposition over what it calls the "deteriorating" economic situation in the country.
The opposition also holds Kosor's government responsible for a failure to implement reforms and for poor public credibility, stressing that this has been caused by numerous financial scandals and internal conflicts within the ruling Croatian Democratic Union, HDZ.
Kosor came to power in July 2009 after the sudden resignation of former prime minister and HDZ leader Ivo Sanader. After becoming PM and leader of the ruling HDZ she launched a broad anti-corruption campaign.
A dozen former top officials have been investigated, while former deputy prime minister Polancec was recently sentenced to 15 months in jail for abuse of position. Last week Sanader unexpectedly asked for his seat in parliament to be reactivated, triggering speculations about what his return could mean for the HDZ. Sanader was kicked out of the party in January following a failed coup.
