161 and done - War criminals in the former Yugoslavia

the economist
Jul 22nd 2011, 17:35 by T.J.

BELGRADE
ON WEDNESDAY morning I took Serbia’s JAT Airways flight from Belgrade to Brussels. It is not direct. It stops to let people off in Amsterdam and to pick up people there who are going to Belgrade. But, if you are going to Brussels, you don’t have to get off the plane in Holland. While we were waiting I turned on my mobile and received a text to say that Goran Hadzic had been arrested. Then, officious crew members fussed about and demanded that I turn off my phone in case it interfered with the plane’s communications and prompted our parked plane to crash....more...

When Serbian police forces moved into the quiet village of Krusedol early in the morning of July 20 and arrested the country’s last fugitive war crimes suspect, they closed a chapter on a long and tortuous history.
This was an action that Serbia had to take if it is truly determined to put the shadow of the Milosevic era behind it....more...

EU Enlargement Official Pushes For More Serbian Reforms

European Union Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Fuele has hailed Serbia's arrest of fugitive war crimes

The capture of Hadzic, who led Serb separatist forces during Croatia's 1991-95 war, came just two months after that of Ratko Mladic, the Bosnian-Serb commander. Hadzic is now likely to join him shortly at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY). ...more...

Bosnia and the EU - Brussel's balm

Can the prospect of better EU ties unite Bosnia’s squabbling politicians?

SARAJEVO
from the print edition
“WE COULD spend another decade in this limbo,” groans Amer Kapetanovic, who runs the European Union department at the Bosnian foreign ministry. On July 14th the country’s leaders failed, yet again, to create a government. To ordinary people the absence of a central authority since October’s general election is not always noticeable. Much of the day-to-day running of Bosnia is conducted by its regional governments: the Republika Srpska and the federation of Bosniaks (Bosnian Muslims) and Croats. But for Mr Kapetanovic and his friends the impasse is an insufferable check on their ambitions....more...

Leader of 1990s Serbian insurgency in Croatia makes no move to appeal or delay transfer after seven years on the run
