**Matteo Albertini is an independent researcher based in Milan, who has been involved with issues related to the Balkans since his M.A thesis in 2005. He recently completed his Ph.D in Semiotics at the Italian Institute of Human Sciences, with a thesis on the cultural and social construction of Yugoslav nationalisms. As a semiotician, his main areas of focus are ethnicity, memory and public policies in the former Yugoslavia, subjects he has discussed in many articles in several international and Italian journals.
