Le Tribunal pénal international pour l'ex-Yougoslavie (TPIY) a lancé, mercredi 16 novembre, un mandat d'arrêt contre Florence Hartmann, journaliste et ancienne porte-parole du procureur du TPIY. Condamnée à verser une amende de 7 000 euros pour avoir "délibérément et sciemment entravé le cours de la justice", la Française avait refusé de payer. La sanction a été "transformée en une peine de sept jours de prison", précise la chambre d'appel....more....

L'ancien chef militaire des Serbes de Bosnie, Ratko Mladic, 69 ans, a annoncé jeudi 10 novembre qu'il n'assisterait pas à une audience prévue dans l'après-midi devant le Tribunal pénal international pour l'ex-Yougoslavie (TPIY).

"Je ne suis pas en mesure d'assister aux procédures devant la cour ce jour en raison d'une maladie", a-t-il indiqué dans un document publié par le TPIY. "Je renonce à mon droit à être présent devant la cour ce jour et donne mon consentement à ce que la procédure continue en mon absence, mais en présence de mon avocat", a-t-il ajouté....more...

Croatia's former prime minister has denied accepting bribes from a Hungarian oil company as his corruption trial resumed in Zagreb. Sanader already stands accused of receiving bribes from an Austrian bank.

Former Croatian Prime Minister Ivo Sanader pleaded not guilty to further corruption charges on Thursday as his trial continued in the Croatian capital, Zagreb.

Sanader said he denied "categorically and with indignation" accepting a bribe worth 10 million euros ($13.63 million) from the Hungarian oil company MOL. The latest charges were added to an existing corruption case against the 58-year-old which began last week....more...

A man has opened fire on the US Embassy in Bosnia, injuring at least one Bosnian police officer. Officials have labeled the shooting a "terrorist attack" and have blamed it on a Muslim extremist.

A man opened fire outside the US embassy in Bosnia on Friday in what authorities have labeled an act of terrorism.

At least one police officer was injured in the attack in the capital, Sarajevo, which after a 30-minute standoff with police ended with the gunman being shot. He was arrested with wounds and was reportedly being treated in a hospital. The embassy said none of its employees had been injured....more...

NATO soldiers retreated from a tense stand-off on Saturday as they tried to dismantle a barrier erected by ethnic Kosovo Serbs.

Last week, 23-year-old Mevlik Jasarevic made headlines when he got off a tram outside the U.S. Embassy in Sarajevo and began firing an automatic rifle.
But his journey began several hours earlier that morning, when he crossed the border from Serbia into Bosnia-Herzegovina. Jasarevic is a Serbian citizen.
Stepping from tram No. 3, Jasarevic reportedly yelled "Run! Run away!" at passersby as he pulled an AK-47 from his backpack and began to fire. He continued to shoot for some 20 minutes before a police sniper shot him in the leg. It was later revealed that he had two explosives on him, but he apparently made no attempt to activate them. In fact, he stood calmly at the tram stop throughout the incident, making no effort to leave or to take cover....more...

AN EXTRAORDINARY week or so in Croatia. Parliament has been dissolved and on October 31st President Ivo Josipovic called elections for December 4th. It was announced that ruling Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) is being investigated for corruption. Ivo Sanader, the former head of the HDZ and prime minister went on trial and independent Croatia’s first interior minister was arrested on charges of murders allegedly committed in 1945. A DRAMATIC day in Sarajevo. A man identified as Mevlid Jasarevic, aged 23, began shooting at the American embassy. He was then shot and wounded by Bosnian police. Balkan Insight has the full story with footage which you can see here. The initial evidence would seem to point to a psychiatric case rather than a well-planned terrorist attack. From the film the attacker can be seen with beard and Muslim garb. Reports suggest he is from Novi Pazar, in Sandzak, the Bosniak majority area of Serbia. Balkan Insight reports that an eyewitness said that the attacker “paced back and forth in front of the embassy for five minutes, screaming 'Bring me an American, I want an American.'" ...more....
