Kosovo Urges UN To Recognize 'Reality' Of Independence

August 04, 2010

Kosovo Foreign Minister Skender Hyseni has formally asked the UN Security Council to adopt a new resolution reflecting the reality created by his country's independence.

He told reporters he had pressed the 15-member council to replace UN Security Council 1244, adopted in 1999 as the basis for UN administration of the breakaway Serbian province, by a new resolution.

Hyseni said after taking part in a Security Council debate on Kosovo that the new text "would reflect the reality created by the independence of Kosovo and [its] endorsement by the [International Court of Justice]."

Serbia has tabled a draft resolution in the General Assembly that calls for new negotiations on Kosovo but does not insist on status talks.

Kosovo unilaterally declared independence from Serbia in February 2008 and last month the ICJ ruled that the move did not contravene international law. Hyseni predicted a slew of recognition from reluctant countries after the ICJ decision.

Sixty-nine countries, including the United States and 22 of 27 member states of the EU, have so far recognized the majority ethnic Albanian Kosovo as an independent state.
