October 24, 2010 – 4:23 am
Basketball coach of Croatia’s national team, Neven Spahija, is accused in taking part in organized torture of Serbs in the military prison in Sibenik.
According to the testimony of 2 former military policemen, Mario Barisic and Miro Petkovic, the Coach was beating Serbian prisoners.
“Spahija was in the team of Tvrtko Pasalic and Zeljko Maglov. I attest that Spahija was beating the prisoners when they were brought from Nos Kalik and we were present when he [Spahija] brutally beat one prisoner who was cleaning the premises in Subicevac. He [Spahija] beat him with his feet and cussed at his chetnik mother,” said Petkovic in his sworn testimony.
Pasalic was Croatia’s chief spy for the Sibenik region while Maglov was the chief of the regional military police and along with the prison warden, Damir Borsic and one policeman, Milorad Pajic, all are accused of committing atrocities against Yugoslav troops and Serbs civilians.
Spahija confirmed that he was part of the military police but denied beatings and said that his “face is clear”.
